the example cited first by harry reid, with the governor arguing that the government should focus less on washington's budget battle and more on what's happening in the states. mark, i think you guys do an excellent job outlining the examples here. so the question is do you -- >> it actually remains to be seen. this is what happens to a party that is out of power, out of the white house. we saw the democrats grapple with this after john kerry lost in 2004. so 2005-2006 was all a battle of ideas, how do you position the party for success and the lessons and the fights in the republican party has now either help it going ahead to 2016 or actually could keep it where it currently is right now. but to answer your question, we're really not going to know for another year or two, this is just the beginning of those types of fights. >> congresswoman marsha blackburn was on with chuck todd this morning and he asked her, is the gop problem a message or messenger problem, here's what she said? >> i think it's a little bit of beth in that we have a good solid philosophical core, we have the right

that left harry reid with just 59 of the 60 votes needed to move on to confirmation marking the first ever successful filibuster of a cabinet nominee. because of the coming senate recess, the next chance to confirm hagel will be the last week of february. in the meantime, republicans continued to find new reasons to justify they are obstruction. senator john mccain's latest gripe is personal. >> there's a lot of ill will towards senator hagel because when he was republican, he attacked president bush mercilessly. at one point said he was the worst president since herbert hoover, said that the surge was the worst blunder since the vietnam war, which is nonsense. and was very amti his own party and his own people. people don't forget that. >> people also don't forget that years after hagel's republican herecy, john mccane said this of the man in 2006. i would be honored to have chuck with me in any capacity. he'd make a great secretary of state. people have also not forgotten that this filibuster has nothing to do with chuck hagel and everything to do with a republican vendetta against

reid let's it die in the senate. that brings me to today's f-bomb. well the gun junkie lobby has decided where to place the blame for gun violence in a society where it's really easy to get guns. it's at axis of scapegoats. let's look at the games first. yesterday, senator lamar alexander actually said that violent video games are bigger problem than guns. i'll never forget my first day in new york and i was in an alley israel and a raving manback jumped out and threw an atari 2600 q-bert game directly at my heart. countries with the highest video game consumption are really quite safe. is studies have proven that watching violent video games make children more aggressive, but only one country has this type of gun violence. it's got to be the violent movies. when is hollywood going to answer for all the make believe answer causing all the violence across the world. joe scarborough who i like has been going off on quentin tarantino and calling him a jack ass for releasing "django unchained"ded". let's

some republicans were upset that harry reid said he wasn't going to honor a hold. what you're seeing here from republicans is a play to make sure that they flex a little muscle so that the democrats understand that the president's agenda has to go through them and that's on guns, on immigration. i agree with david. i think this will get done but it's never great for a nominee to have to wait another week to hang out there and take shots from opposition. it's not a great place for them to be but i'm not worried that this is not going to get through but this is the flexing of the muscle by republicans in the senate for sure. >> okay. so hagel gets blocked at least for now. rand paul and others are threatening to block john brennan. susan rice didn't get to the nomination process. is this rocky road if that's how we want to describe it, david, does this hurt the president's credibility or at least his ability to get things done, a small distraction, should it become a smaller one? put it into the wider con tech in terms of what the white house want to be accomplishing
